Orem Elementary students were surprised during their Christmas assembly on Friday as their parents and teachers spontaneously broke out in song and dance.

About 30 adults began a choreographed dance when “Jingle Bells” by Hampton the Hamster started playing. Adria Howse, a PTA parent at the school, organized the event to have fun and show the teachers in a different light.

“School is hard, but you can take breaks like this and have fun,” Howse said. “It’s fun to see a different side of your teacher’s personality that you don’t see in class.”

The idea for the flash mob, initially pitched by parent Karli VerHoef, was met with excitement from Orem Elementary teachers. Teachers and parents met before school on Thursday and Friday morning to practice a dance they found in an instructional YouTube video.

“I think it helps them connect more and unify the school,” computer teacher Janice Smith said.

Starting at $4.32/week.
