Highland man pleads guilty to tax fraud
A Highland man pleaded guilty during a hearing Tuesday to charges that he failed to report hundreds of thousands of dollars of illegally obtained income to the IRS. Kevin Jason Shamy, 31, admitted that while working for a lending company in 2007 he received $224,997 from a client hoping to obtain a loan. But that same year, Shamy listed his income as $47,944 on his tax return. As part of his confession, Shamy said that he willfully failed to report the payment he received from his client, and that the money was derived from criminal activity. Shamy has agreed to file a corrected tax return and could face three years in prison and a $100,000 fine.
