Try for the Y
YMCA is a great option, why do we want to take on the debt of a rec center, when the YMCA is an established nonprofit organization? The YMCA has been established in the U.S. since 1851. Our community exceeds the minimum criteria for a YMCA.
Pros of a YMCA:
•Residents not committed to higher property taxes
•No need for sales tax increase
•Join the YMCA here and you can go to any YMCA in the country
•YMCA is in 10,000 communities across the country
•We let an established organization (YMCA) efficiently manage the operations and avoid expenses of additional city employee salaries
Cons of REC Center:
•Cost to Springville city residents
•Tax increase to offset operational costs
Although the projected tax increase to cover the bond is established, it is quite likely we will see inflation due to the double dip or near double dip recession.
In addition there may less tax dollars coming into the city coffers because of people out of work and not able to afford to pay property taxes. Furthermore shoppers may cut back on spending in Springville because of the increase in sales tax resulting in less revenue.
Projecting tax revenue receipts when the economy is flourishing is considerably more reliable than when people are out of work and possibly have been for months if not years. • Ronald Stewart, Springville
