PROVO — A Provo man was arrested earlier this week on several rape charges stemming from incidents in the 1990s. David Hamblin is being charged with 12 counts of rape of a child, three counts of sodomy of a child, one count of attempted sodomy of a child, all first-degree felonies, and two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a second-degree felony.

The charges are based on events that reportedly happened between 1991 and 1998. In Utah there is no statute of limitations for child sex crimes, meaning they can be prosecuted regardless of how much time has passed since the crime was reportedly committed.

The accuser recently went to police, saying she is still afraid for her life because Hamblin threatened to kill her and several of her family members if she ever told anyone about the abuse. The accuser also said she has difficulty sleeping, has to check her home every time she returns to make sure no one is there, that she can’t be home alone at night and that she is afraid for her family’s lives as well, according to a police statement. The accuser said the abuse took place from the time she was 5 years old until she was 13.

In an eight-page affidavit the accuser describes in graphic detail multiple incidents when she was raped by Hamblin, as well as the ways he allegedly threatened to kill her. All of the alleged crimes took place in Provo. The investigation into the case has been ongoing since January.

Hamblin will be in court in American Fork on Jan. 8 for a waiver hearing.
