Undercover operation leads to arrest of alleged child predator
PLEASANT GROVE — An undercover operation done by Pleasant Grove police officers has resulted in the arrest of a Lindon man accused of soliciting children for sex.
According to police reports, the investigation began in June when Sgt. Joshua Motsinger was using Craigslist to investigate sexual exploitation of children. He came across an ad posted by a person looking for a young girl. Court documents state the ad said, “the younger the better.” Motsinger set up a profile through Gmail and a texting app, Kik, and portrayed himself as 13-year-old boy from Pleasant Grove named Alex Jensen. Posing as Jensen, the officer sent a message to the ad poster, to which the poster responded and asked for a photo. Motsinger replied that he didn’t have access to send a picture.
The email response from the poster had a signature that said, “sent from my iPhone JoryLee.” Officers were able to locate a Jory Lee Judd from Lindon. Judd proceeded to ask for a photo several times, to which Motsinger replied that he wouldn’t send any photos because of past experience.
Judd engaged in conversations with Motsinger multiple times via e-mail and texting and revealed that he was 37 years old and that his Kik user name was JL Judd. According to police documents, officers were able to match the profile photo from Kik to Judd’s Utah driver’s license.
Judd also told Motsinger, whom he believed to be the 13-year-old Jensen, that he wanted to engage in several different sexual acts with him. In police reports Motsinger wrote that he told Judd three separate times that he was only 13 but that Judd proceeded to talk about sexual acts he wanted to perform and send sexually explicit photos of himself. Judd then began to ask if Jensen could sneak out of his house so he could pick him up and take him in his Bronco to engage in sex. Judd told Motsinger that he lived near the Lindon pool with his mother.
Police reports say that throughout the interaction, Motsinger tried several times to get Judd to stop chatting him but that he kept emailing and texting him and always took the conversation in a sexual direction.
Police were able to get IP and e-mail information from Craigslist and found that Judd lived at 122 W. 40 South in Lindon, near the pool, and that a 1991 Bronco, consistent with the vehicle Judd had told Motsinger about, was parked at the residence.
On Tuesday, Motsinger told Judd that he would be able to sneak out of his home and agreed to meet him at Battle Creek Park in Pleasant Grove. Motsinger told Judd to bring a condom and lubricant. Officers set up surveillance both at Judd’s home and at the park and followed him as he drove to the park.
Officers arrested Judd and found both lubricant and condoms on his person, according to police reports.
During an interview with Judd after the arrest, he allegedly told Motsinger that he was a war veteran but was kicked out of the Navy due to alcohol addiction. Judd also told police that he is addicted to sex and that he had used the Internet to solicit sex from older men in the past but never went through with the encounters.
According to police reports, Judd also sent pictures of a 15-year-old girl to Motsinger, when he believed he was Jensen, and told him that he had met the girl on the Internet and he was planning on engaging in sexual acts with her as well. He also admitted to engaging in sexual acts via the Internet with the girl. Judd also said during police interviews that he had child porn on his computer and several external hard drives.
Judd was booked into the Utah County Jail on charges of enticement of a child, a second-degree felony, and dealing harmful material to a child, a third-degree felony.
