Big changes coming to Liberty Academy in Salem

By Shannon Poulsen - Correspondent - | Jun 7, 2013

Acquiring knowledge and building character to create contributing citizens who embody traditional American values has been the mission statement for Liberty Academy Charter School in Salem. This K-9 Charter school of 427 students and 30 teachers and staff, in the 2012-2013 school year, has been up and running teaching students from in and around the Salem area since 2006.

“All of our children have attended school here and we are pleased with the education they have received,” said Dee Henderson, Chairman of the Board. “We as parents want to do whatever we can to add more to the school to make the experience here at Liberty as best as it can be.”

Even as pleased as the parents are with the school, many felt the need for something more. Much time was spent researching options and holding meetings to discuss what was best for the school.

Per majority vote of the Liberty Academy’s governing board, the charter school will be taken over by a new Educational Management company, American Preparatory School, starting immediately, with the academic changes occurring this fall.

“The students test scores, who attend these schools, are incredible,” said Henderson. “These students are top-performers.”

The governing board is very excited to see the award-winning program that APS has implemented in four Salt Lake County schools come to Utah County.

APS has a waiting list of 12,000 students who want to attend one of their campuses.

APS is an Educational Management company that manages charter schools. They are in charge of everything, from payroll to the hiring of the teachers and staff. American Prep is a classical, liberal arts school. They follow the classical education model of the Trivium – respecting the grammar, logic and rhetorical phases of learning and development and applying those principles in classroom teaching to ensure students are progressing through the stages appropriately.

A big hit with the parents was that APS teachers provide bi-weekly report cards for their students. By doing this they feel that parents are more aware of how their students are performing and where they need to improve.

“It is exciting that we are now coming to south Utah County,” said Tim Evanich, Chief Operations Officer for APS. “This change will be a great asset for this school. We are excited to help with this transition, so it runs smoothly.”

APS will be holding public information meetings every Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Liberty Campus in Salem at 1195 S. Elk Ridge Drive. For more information on American Prep School or the Salem Liberty Campus, please visit www.americanprep.org.
