Crews knock down Provo’s old rec center
PROVO — One after the other the walls of the racquetball courts at the old recreation center in Provo fell Friday as a demolition crew continued tearing down the building.
Built in 1973, it was the first recreation center for the city outside of what was available at BYU at the time.
With the construction of the new recreation center a few blocks away, the old one is being demolished to make way for renovations and additions of a new stadium, outdoor concessions and bathrooms at the Provo High School football field.
The new rec center, which will open in the spring, will include tennis courts, a skate park, swimming pools, weight rooms and more, including areas for senior citizen activities and for teenagers. Annual adult passes will be $285, and a family membership will be $493. Nonresidents will pay more.
The city is offering naming opportunities for businesses, family foundations and others who want their names on the new building. Sponsors will have plaques put up about their history in whatever room they have sponsored.
Voters approved a $39 million bond in 2010 to fund the rec center. Layton Construction is the general contractor.
