Here in Utah Valley, some might categorize us as economically efficient (or cheap if they’re feeling accusatory). Whether it’s in our businesses or personal finances, Utahns like to get the most bang for their buck — i.e. CostCo free samples, couponing and a competitive job market.

One Kickstarter project has focused in on this, capitalizing on the desire for trendy accessories without having to shell out hundreds of dollars. Mnmlst Watch Co., created by two BYU graduates, not only saved on letters and space in its name, managed to cut costs but not style with a $50 watch.

The watches’ popularity took off on the crowd funding site, receiving double the pledges — $41,000 — needed to reach its $20,000 goal. With less than a week to go, Mnmlst Watch Co. is funded and snagging a few extra dollars and backers with the little time remaining. If the project manages another $9,000 in pledges, it will reach its second stretch goal, making another watch face available to backers.

According to the company’s Kickstarter page, it based the product off three perceived desires: simplicity, durability and customization. From there Mnmlst Watch Co. designed a watch out of stainless steel with a small logo and stylish, detachable bands.

The faces of the three watches have been designed in gold, black and silver with green, brown and navy and white stripped bands.

While the color options for the interchangeable bands are a great start, let’s hope the extra funding from the project goes to a few more timeless colors and trendy materials. One backer also made a good comment, suggesting the team simplify the logo for increased readability.

The campaign hopes to have watches manufactured and shipped to all 600-plus backers by February 2015.

What: Minimalist watch designed for durability and customization with interchangeable bands and faces for only $50.

Failed or funded?: More than 200 percent funded before its Kickstarter project deadline. Project ends on Dec. 19.
