Deputy Greg Sherwood released from hospital

SPANISH FORK — Family, friends and neighbors gathered on Tuesday in Spanish Fork to welcome home a hero — Deputy Greg Sherwood, the Utah County Sheriff’s deputy who was shot in the head in January.

Sherwood was injured in Santaquin on Jan. 30 after locating a suspect who shot and killed Sgt. Cory Wride at an earlier incident in Eagle Mountain.

Sherwood was welcomed home to signs, banners and flags and a line of his law enforcement brothers from the Utah County Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement agencies.

Robert Davies, bishop of the Spanish Fork 7th Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, borrowed American flags from another ward in the neighborhood to lined the street and front yard of the Sherwood’s home.

“We just love Greg,” Gayle Davies, Robert’s wife said. “We are so glad that he is home. He is such a good guy.”

Gayle Davies sent out texts to members of the ward and neighbors letting them know when Sherwood would arrive home. The group gathered in front of the Sherwood home with signs welcoming him home.

“We really care about Greg and his family,” Jenny Shick, a neighbor, said. “We are so glad he is home.”

Lynda Pugh, a neighbor, also attended the welcome home.

“Greg is just so blessed to be home and OK,” said Pugh.

Members of the UCSO K9 Team were also in attendance to welcome Sherwood home.

“It’s a great day,” K9 Sergeant Tom Hodgson said. “It is overwhelming to see the support people have given to Greg and to his family. We are very thankful for the opportunity we have to serve. We are proud of Greg and all he has done.”

And no one is happier that Greg is home than his own family members. His sister, Jennifer Reynolds, snapped photos as the sheriff’s vehicle brought Greg into his driveway. It was an emotional day for the family, but one they have waited weeks for.

“This whole thing has just been surreal,” said Reynolds. “We have had so much support from the community and the whole police force and the bond they have. This has been really hard, to watch someone you love struggle. But I am so proud of Greg for the way he worked through that and for the awesome man that he is.”
