Provo, Orem top the charts for birth rates in the United States

By Kari Kenner - Daily Herald - | Aug 13, 2015

Though it may not come as a surprise to the locals, the state of Utah is topping the charts when it comes to having babies.

In a report released by Bloomberg Business Thursday morning, Utah cities ranked first, third and fifth of the top 20 most populous metro areas in the United States with the highest births per 1,000 people.

Getting down to the numbers of it, the Provo/Orem area came on top with a total of 21.4 births per 1,000 people, followed by Ogden-Clearfield in third with 17.2 and Salt Lake City in fifth with 16.6. Other top contenders included McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Texas (in second with 19.5), Bakersfield, California (in fourth with 17) and Fresno, California (tied for fifth with 16.6).

According to the release, a few factors play into birth rates in metropolitan areas, including unemployment rates (just 3.5 percent in Utah, compared to 5.3 percent average in the United States) and a large number of younger households.

Provo Mayor John Curtis was cited in the release, attributing Provo’s birth rate to a couple key factors: young married students at Brigham Young University and the predominant Mormon faith in the area.

“There’s a high Mormon population,” Curtis was quoted as saying in the study. “Mormons like big families – we’re not bashful about that at all.”
