SPANISH FORK — One of the two men riding in a semi-trailer truck involved in a fatal traffic accident Tuesday in Spanish Fork Canyon has been released from the hospital.

The truck driver, Tyrel Gardner, was originally transported to Mountain View Hospital in Payson. As of Wednesday, Gardner, 42, of Santaquin, was treated and released, hospital officials said.

The passenger in the truck, Michael Bishop, was flown to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo. Hospital officials said Wednesday that Bishop, 42, of Eagle Mountain, is in “serious but stable” condition.

Arik Mack, 19, of Mapleton was killed in the collision.

Officials with Utah Highway Patrol said they do not know the cause of the crash, but said Mack crossed the center line of U.S. Highway 6 into oncoming traffic. Officials are investigating his cellphone.

UHP said the semi-trailer, which was carrying a load of coal, jackknifed after the collision and spilled coal on to the highway. The crash also damaged some power poles. Rocky Mountain Power was on the scene Tuesday evening working to make repairs.

A third vehicle involved in the crash had only minor damage and left the scene soon after the collision.
