Letters: Tingey thoughts on the BYU Honor Code and student athletes

May 21, 2015

Brigham Young University is known for its strict, no tolerance Honor Code especially regarding clothing standards. If you’re wearing shorts above the knee, sleeves that don’t cover your shoulders, clothes that are too tight, or any other dress and grooming violation — expect to be denied services on campus. That is… unless you’re an athlete.

This is no fault on the athletes’ part; they are only wearing the clothing that the University issues to them. However, according to the Honor Code, non-athletes participating in the same activities are not permitted to dress in a similar manner.

There’s a reason athletes dress this way; it enables optimal performance and comfort.

Why are the rest of us denied these benefits? We may not be performing at a collegiate level, but we still participate in intramural sports and other physical activities. This issue doesn’t require more restriction on athletes’ clothing, but instead a standard equal to athletes’ for all students.
