Utah Board of Education releases grades for local schools

By Braley Dodson daily Herald - | Sep 15, 2016

Grades for schools in Utah County have been released.

The Utah State Board of Education on Thursday released school grades based off 2016 Student Assessment of Growth and Excellence scores, or SAGE scores.

School grades this year aren’t on the same scale used last year. A technicality in state law regarding school grading dictates that if 65 percent of schools receive an A or B, the state board of education must raise the range of scores for grades by 5 percent. This year, 74 percent of elementary schools and 66 percent of high schools would have earned an A or B, which led to a recalculation.

In Alpine School District, seven elementary, middle or junior high schools received an A grade, 45 received a B grade, 16 received a C grade and one received a D grade. Seven high schools received a B grade and one received a C grade.

Alpine Online School received a D.

Barratt Elementary School in American Fork, Cedar Ridge Elementary School in Cedar Hills, the Cherry Hill Elementary School gifted program in Orem, Highland Elementary School, Lakeridge Junior High School in Orem, Valley View Elementary School in Pleasant Grove and Westfield Elementary School in Alpine received A grades.

In Nebo School District, one elementary, middle or junior high school received an A grade, 19 received a B grade, 14 received C grades and one received a D. Two high schools received a B grade, two received C grades and one received an F.

Hobble Creek Elementary School in Mapleton received an A, Park Elementary School in Spanish Fork received a D and Payson High School received an F.

In Provo City School District, three elementary, middle or junior high schools received an A, nine received a B, three received a C and one received a D. One high school received a B and one received a C.

Centennial Middle School, Edgemont Elementary School and Lakeview Elementary School received an A. Franklin Elementary School received a D.

Statewide, 9.54 percent of elementary, middle or junior high schools received an A, 46.62 received a B, 32.58 percent received a C, 8.21 percent received a D and 3.05 percent received an F.

For high schools, 4.26 percent received an A, 38.30 percent received a B, 34.04 percent received a C, 9.22 percent received a D and 14.18 percent received an F.

More students increased their proficiency in math and science, and SAGE scores in language arts remained steady, according to a press release from the Utah State Board of Education.
