There will be a new LDS temple in Saratoga Springs.

President Thomas S. Monson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, started off the Sunday morning session of the 187th Annual General Conference by announcing five new temples to be built. A small cheer could be heard in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City when he announced that one of the five would be built in Saratoga Springs, Utah.

The Saratoga Springs temple will be the fifth LDS temple in Utah County, joining the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple, the Provo Utah Temple, the Provo City Center Temple and the Payson Utah Temple.

Saratoga Springs Mayor Jim Miller expressed his excitement over the announcement.

“On behalf of myself, the City Council and many of our residents, we are thrilled to have this sacred building added to our community,” he said in a statement published online. “There are many faithful members of the LDS Church in Saratoga Springs and the surrounding area who will benefit from having this new temple located in our city.

“Saratoga Springs looks forward to working with the LDS Church in making this new temple a beautiful part of our community.”

The exact location of the new temple wasn’t announced Sunday. Saratoga Springs spokesman Owen Jackson said the church hasn’t yet submitted a site plan or sought permits with the city. The church and its various holdings own about 2,800 acres of land within the city, but Jackson didn’t know where the temple may go.

In addition to this new temple to be built in Utah — the 18th in the state — President Monson announced four others: Brasília, Brazil; Greater Manila, Philippines; Nairobi, Kenya; and Pocatello, Idaho.

When complete, the new Brazil temple will be the 10th temple in the country. Brazil has more than 1.3 million members. The new Manila temple will be the second one there, and will be one of four serving the nearly 750,000 Latter-day Saints in the Philippines.

The Kenya temple will serve more than 30,000 members in East Africa. Of those in operation and announced, the Nairobi temple will be the eighth temple in Africa. Idaho has four operating temples, and with the Pocatello announcement, the state will have six temples. Idaho is home to approximately 450,000 Latter-day Saints.
