Mountain View High School student pleads guilty to adult charge in stabbing incident
The teenage boy charged with stabbing five of his classmates and himself at Mountain View High School pleaded guilty to one charge that was transferred to adult court through a unique resolution.
The teenager, Luke Dollahite, pleaded guilty in Fourth District Court to one first-degree felony of attempted aggravated murder.
The Daily Herald does not typically name underage criminal defendants. However, because Dollahite, 16, pleaded guilty in the adult court system, his information is available in public records.
Dollahite is charged with bringing several knives and weapons into the Orem school on Nov. 15 and stabbing five classmates, whom he later told police he selected “at random.”
On April 4, Dollahite admitted in the Orem Fourth District Juvenile Court to four other first-degree felonies of attempted aggravated murder, as part of the resolution.
“This resolution provides an appropriate balance of justice and mercy in our opinion,” deputy Utah County attorney Sam Pead said. “We’re glad we got here instead of having to go to more extreme efforts to see that justice is done in this case.”
Dollahite is in confinement at the Wasatch Youth Center in Salt Lake City and could be there until he’s 21. The Youth Parole Authority has the discretion to decide when Dollahite will be transferred from Wasatch Youth Center to the Utah State Prison. Dollahite is receiving mental health treatment from Wasatch Youth Center.
Statutorily, Dollahite could face 15 years to life for the charge he’s now plead guilty to. However, Pead said he and involved parties recommend a lessened sentence of 10 years to life in prison.
“This kind of case warrants adult criminal punishment,” Pead said. “We expect he’ll serve a while in secure care and we’re all for that before he goes to the adult system.”
Dollahite will be sentenced on June 22.
