Thursday featured the dollar theater’s last showings. For the next two weeks, crews will be dismantling the theaters, packing and shipping off usable assets to other locations.

The seats are empty, the screens are dark, and the ghosts of Cinemark Movies 8 are now all that is left of the theater icon in Provo.

The Daily Herald reached out to some former patrons to hear their personal stories or experiences at one of the most popular places in Provo.

Teresa Madsen So tired of seeing places and memories being torn down for more apartments, offices, and stores. Especially when the businesses are used and enjoyed by so many. There will be nothing left

Eliza Snow Really? Do you know what businesses/apartments are being built that are pushing the dollar theater out? There is construction to open that parking lot more because driving on Uni Pwky makes the turn too difficult for small stores to attract customers. We’ve seen it. A little shop/restaurant opens in that plaza and then closes. Also the construction is for a trolley system much like what Salt Lake has. Cinemark 8 is “choosing” to leave despite these improvements even though they have been asked to stay. John Curtis, the mayor, told me this straight from his mouth.

Deanna Siemer Haws I just still do not understand why they would close this theater. It was always busy. I worked there for so many years and met many friends there. This was the only theater as a single mom, that I could afford to take my kids to see movies. Watching movies at home is just not the same. This is a sad, sad day.

Shannon Clark Allen I feel bummed that all the fun stores and neat places to go in Provo are now diminishing because the land can be sold to build apartments. Augh…

Bye Movies 8, Shopko, Seagull, …

Shae Jackson Soooo unbelievably disappointed in Provo City. A massive Californian company coming in to buy land in Provo to not even profit the people of Utah. It’s so disappointing.

Lynda Gordon Chu I always looked forward to shopping in this location, I’m saddened that so many shop and the movie theater are going. I hope I will like what replaces them. . . If apartments, I won’t. What has Provo become?

Sheri Brown Makes me sad they closed its the only place a big family could all afford to get together and see a movie

Jamie Hatfield Angela Hamilton this makes me sad. Remember my first day here??? The stupid purple light still haunts me.

Patrick Charles Anniskette Jr. So lame that they didn’t even respond to the proposed offer to stay.

Joe Morgan Worst. Day. Ever.

Jami Whicker Kennedy Valerie Rodabough Nelson it’s where we saw Tarzan remember?!?! Haha

Tiffany Irvine I had no idea it was even still there. I haven’t been since jr high

Justin Brenn Nixon Long live the nightly cruises of the 8 even though that was years ago the memories will live on

Cindi Sutherland So sad to see you go. Will another theater be opening up in the valley?

Darci Bayles Diana BayLes what the heck! We have so many memories here! Sad day!!

Adam Sellars Brady Garrett so many memories going there when we were kids!

Craig Schroerlucke It’s disgusting that this entire complex will turn into the same eyesore that sits on State in Orem.

Trina Timothy Nache I’m so sad, more memories gone in the interest of progress.

Vince Ma This breaks my heart something fierce. These sick huge companies are ruining it all.

Tanda Jan Owens I used to work there too. Can’t believe it’s closing

Virginia Hoskins Walter Boooooooooooo I will never, ever go to whatever place is taking over here.

Lyndi Hatch Buehler Cruising the 8… those were the days!

Melanie Hair Titus Many great dates to those theaters
