South Jordan teen charged with attempted murder sentenced to prison

A South Jordan teenager who pleaded guilty to attempted murder was sentenced to five years to life in prison on Tuesday.

Martin Carrasco, 18, was charged as an adult in Fourth District Court in Provo, and appeared before Judge James Brady for sentencing. Carrasco turned 18 earlier in July.

Brady sentenced Carrasco to two terms of five years to life in the Utah State Prison, one for attempted aggravated murder and one for attempted murder. Both convictions are first-degree felonies.

He will serve these terms concurrently with two counts of robbery and one count of theft — each second-degree felonies.

According to charging documents, Carrasco planned to rob a drug dealer in December when they met to purchase illegal drugs at an American Fork parking lot. When Carrasco demanded the dealer “hand over all the drugs and money he had with him,” the dealer refused, according to court documents. Carrasco pulled out a handgun and again demanded the dealer hand over the drugs. A physical confrontation started, involving Carrasco, the dealer and the dealer’s girlfriend.

According to charging documents, after hitting the girlfriend with the gun, Carrasco turned the gun on the dealer and shot him three times, hitting him in the chest, thigh and forearm. Carrasco then fled on foot.

A witness at the scene followed Carrasco in a vehicle. Carrasco fired two shots at the driver of the vehicle. American Fork police officers chased Carrasco and caught him while trying to climb a fence to escape.

During the altercation, a stray bullet went through the window of a nearby Taco Bell restaurant, but no one was injured inside.

Carrasco was also a suspect in two gas station robberies in Mount Pleasant and Orem two months earlier. He and two other males also were suspected of stealing three vehicles and burglarizing several others around the same time.

Carrasco’s case was previously handled by the Fourth District Juvenile Court, but Carrasco was charged as an adult in June.

Starting at $4.32/week.
