BYU grad’s ‘glitter bomb’ device takes on porch pirates in trending YouTube video

By Stacy Johnson daily Herald - | Dec 18, 2018

There isn’t anything worse than people stealing packages from porches, except maybe cleaning up glitter.

In a new video posted Monday on YouTube, graduate of Brigham Young University and now popular YouTuber Mark Rober teaches porch pirates just how horrible their crime is.

As an engineer and inventor, Rober created a device to pay back people who steal packages from porches. The device was placed inside a box, and when opened, set off a “glitter bomb,” spraying the thief with ultra fine glitter. The device also intermittently sprays fart spray, making for a smelly punishment.

Rober also included four phones in the package that used motion sensors to turn on and record the thief’s reactions to the glitter bombs. It was outfitted with GPS so that he could retrieve his device each time it was discarded.

Rober graduated from BYU with a degree in mechanical engineering and obtained a Master’s degree from USC. He also worked on the Curiosity rover for NASA, which is now being used on Mars.

Rober’s video was one of the top trending videos on YouTube Tuesday, and garnered more than 13.5 million views by Tuesday afternoon.
