Rep. John Curtis situated to beat Chris Herrod in second primary within a year

By Jordan Carroll daily Herald - | Jun 26, 2018

If Tuesday night felt a little like the sensation of deja vu, it’s because voters saw a similar evening play out with Rep. John Curtis and Chris Herrod less than one year ago.

Now, with seven months of congressional experience under his belt, Curtis appears to be defeating Herrod in yet another primary election for Utah’s 3rd Congressional District. Unofficial results posted shortly after polls closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday, which are not yet final, indicate Curtis is beating Herrod with 74.54 percent of the vote.

According to Curtis, Herrod called with congratulations and conceded after initial results were released.

“I feel like it’s a reassurance that the message is resonating, that people are happy with what we’re doing and how we’re doing it,” Curtis told the Daily Herald.

Curtis entered office in November following a special election to replace Jason Chaffetz, of Alpine, an outspoken GOP congressman who became a Fox News contributor after stepping down to spend more time with family.

Curtis had little time to celebrate Tuesday night, as his immediate next step was to catch a red-eye flight back to Washington, D.C. for upcoming votes.

“We’re going to focus on the general election and being a congressman,” Curtis said.

Leading up to the primary, Herrod frequently painted himself as a true conservative, and Curtis as a moderate. Herrod frequently mentioned his support for the Trump agenda on issues, including building a wall on the Mexican border.

Herrod also made sure to point out that Curtis had not voted for President Donald Trump in 2016, when they debated on May 29.

Herrod could not be reached for comment by press time Tuesday night.

Last time the two men faced off, there was a third candidate, Tanner Ainge, in the mix. Ainge took 28 percent of the vote. In the 2018 primaries, Ainge ran in another race for Utah County Commissioner seat A against Tom Sakievich to fill Greg Graves’ seat.

Official results will not be available until the July 10 canvass.
