An Alpine woman is dead after a crash at the intersection of the Alpine and Timpanogos highways in Highland Monday night.

Patty Nielson, 79, was in a Buick with her husband making a left turn from Timpanogos Highway to Alpine Highway, headed north, when an F-150 driven by a man going west on Timpanogos struck her vehicle around 9 p.m. Monday, Lone Peak Police Detective Dave Ventrano said.

Nielson died upon impact, according to Ventrano.

“People need to definitely be aware of oncoming vehicles,” Ventrano said. “Make sure there is plenty of room.”

Ventrano also reminded drivers that the speed limit in the area for east and westbound traffic is 45 miles per hour.

“Sometimes, cars are coming faster than you obviously think they are,” he said.

Ventrano didn’t know how fast the man driving the F-150 was traveling. He and Nielson’s husband were hospitalized, having moderate to serious but not life-threatening injuries, Ventrano said.

The intersection was closed for three-and-a-half to four hours as Lone Peak Police, joined by the more-equipped Utah County Sheriff’s Department officers, investigated, Ventrano said.

“I haven’t had a chance to go through it,” Ventrano said of the investigation report as of around 10 a.m. Tuesday.
