Provo woman reportedly digitally obstructed justice for boyfriend

By Rhett Wilkinson daily Herald - | Mar 22, 2018

A Provo woman reportedly obstructed justice as part of a relationship with a man previously arrested for serious charges.

Laura Ellen Haycock, 47, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of making a remote wipe of a phone, confirming to another man that she had gone onto his account and deleted information as he had instructed, according to police reports.

Haycock was reportedly living with James Covington, her live-in boyfriend, who was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person earlier this month.

Police learned during an investigation that the two talked several times over the phone. Covington asked Haycock to log onto his Google account and delete his account and the contents of his phone, reports state.

That phone was admitted as evidence in a previous case, reports state. A police officer found that a remote wipe of the phone had been done. On a recorded phone conversation between Covington and Haycock, Haycock told Covington she had gone onto his account and deleted the information as he instructed, according to reports.

Before that, a police officer advised Haycock several times not to get rid of evidence and not to lie about the investigation, as she had been caught lying about the investigation on several different occasions, reports state.

She was booked into Utah County Jail on suspicion of one second-degree felony of obstruction of justice.
