Pole Creek, Bald Mountain fires both at 100 percent containment

By Katie England daily Herald - | Oct 8, 2018

The Pole Creek and Bald Mountain fires are reported at 100 percent containment, according to Utah Fire Info.

As of Sunday evening, most fire crews responding to the fires would be demobilizing Sunday night and Monday.

A Burned Area Emergency Response Team is still working in the area doing repair work on dozer lines and hand lines that were put in place to battle the fires.

The two fires burned a combined 120,851 acres, and at their peak caused more than 6,000 people to evacuate their homes from the cities of Woodland Hills and Elk Ridge and several smaller communities including Covered Bridge at the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon.

All the people evacuated from their homes have since been allowed to return, though several road and area closures remain in place, according to Sgt. Spencer Cannon with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

Areas which remain closed include the Sheep Creek and Diamond Fork areas, Payson Canyon, Diamond Fork Road and access to Lake Fork and Dairy Fork from U.S. Highway 6.

Birdseye and Nebo Creek areas are open to residents only.

Those closures may change within the next couple of days, Cannon said.

The burn area has received precipitation over the last several days as storms have moved through the area, causing threats of flooding in areas near the burn scar.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook remains in place for much of Utah. A cold, wet storm is expected to exit southern and eastern Utah tonight, while another storm system will move into northern Utah Tuesday evening into Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

“Any heavier precipitation bands could pose a threat for burn scars at mid-slopes and lower elevations,” the National Weather Service’s website says.
