Herald editorial: Good luck to the high school student-athletes

By Daily Herald Editorial Board - | Oct 18, 2018

Weeks of hard work, blood, sweat and tears are about to either end in sweet victory or bitter defeat for many high school athletes across Utah Valley.

Playoffs for fall sports have either already begun or begin within the next few weeks. The Lone Peak girls soccer team won a tense, competitive game against Syracuse on Tuesday night, advancing the Knights to the finals for 6A.

And in the same night, Timpview never quite got up to steam against Murray and ended their season at the 5A semifinals.

Next week, the first round of football playoffs begin Friday night. Last year, the might of Utah Valley’s football prowess was clearly in the spotlight as Skyridge and Lehi, practically neighbors, battled each other for the 5A state title.

Girls volleyball playoffs also start in the coming weeks, with many teams eyeing their ways to bump, set and spike their way to the state title.

Through the wins and losses and the highs and lows of each individual sport’s season, the indelible and impermeable spirit of competition remains a strident force. Shouts of joy ring through the stadium as home football team wins another game. Reassuring pats are exchanged on the drooping shoulders of student-athletes when they are narrowly defeated.

But that’s part of the whole point of sports. There will be winners and losers. There will be those who make it to the finals, like the Lone Peak girls soccer team, and those who fall just short of victory. Negative experiences can be viewed in one of two ways. They can either be a sore spot in someone’s side that they mope over until kingdom come, or, preferably, they can be a learning experience.

Archibald MacLeash, the famed American poet, said, “There is only one thing more painful than learning from experience, and that is not learning from experience.”

Now that we’ve waxed philosophical, we’d like to wish the best of luck to the student-athletes representing Utah County. We are home to some of the most renowned athletes in the state. As previously stated, last year, the 5A state title for football came down to two of Utah County’s own home-grown teams. According to MaxPreps, three of the top 10 6A football teams come from Utah County: American Fork, Lone Peak and Pleasant Grove. Likewise, three of the top 10 5A football teams are Utah County’s own: Skyridge, Timpview and Springville.

In volleyball, we have the top 6A team in the state, Lone Peak, as well as Pleasant Grove, the No. 3 team. We’re also home to Utah’s top 5A team, Skyridge, as well as three other top 10 teams, Timpanogos, Springville and Timpview.

Our high school athletics are a force to be reckoned with, and we owe a tremendous congratulations to the students, coaches and support faculty for the work they put in this season. Hard work pays off and it’s plain to see this season has seen plenty of hard work.

We ask that the student-athletes representing Utah County represent us well. Represent the values and morals this county is known for. Be gracious if you lose and don’t gloat or showboat if you win.

We hope that in the coming weeks sportsmanship will be exercised above all, this includes the parents. Yes, Utah County has a right to be proud of the strong work put forward in the fall season of sports. All of the student-athletes have sacrificed a lot of their time and talent to make it to where they’re at in their individual sports. We should be applauding each and every one of them, no matter the outcome. We hear of far too many stories, thankfully few from Utah, of parents belittling or undermining student-athletes for whatever reason. It’s foolish and should be stopped, because frankly, these are high schoolers, and we owe them better than to act their age.

Our team of sports writers is looking forward to covering the many high-stakes games in the next few weeks and they always treat this as an exciting time of year. We hope student-athletes are ready for the tough competition and to make enjoyable memories for the rest of their lives.

In a previous version of this editorial, a sentence read, “We’re also home to Utah’s top 5A team, Lehi, as well as three other top 10 teams, Timpanogos, Springville and Timpview.”

The top 5A volleyball team in Utah is Skyridge, not Lehi, and the story has been corrected to reflect this.
