Social media reacts to new hashtag for general conference

By Kurt Hanson daily Herald - | Sep 28, 2018

On Aug. 16, President Russell M. Nelson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, announced that a change in referring to the name of the church, asking members to essentially remove the terms “LDS” and “Mormon” from their vocabulary.

In keeping with that counsel, the church announced Thursday a new Twitter hashtag for the church’s semiannual General Conference fast approaching next week. Rather than #ldsconf, which was introduced years ago and even appears on screen before each conference session begins, the church has asked its members to now use #generalconference when posting about general conference on social media.

Twitter was quick to react to the news, with a wide range of church members in favor of the initiative and those who were less than thrilled to cut into their character count.

#LDSconf trends nationally during most sessions of general conference.

Many church-approved hashtags still exist and have not received updated style guides, such as #LDSdevo, #LDScharities and #LDSyouth.

Starting at $4.32/week.
