Construction has begun on a Tesla dealership in Pleasant Grove that is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Drake Motor Partners LLC, an entity of Drake Real Estate Services, a Denver-based company, is overseeing the development of the dealership. Drake Motor Partners acquired the site from St. John Properties, Inc., the owner, and developer of Valley Grove.

“Tesla is extremely selective when choosing new dealership sites, so we consider ourselves fortunate to be able to offer the highway visibility, quality consumer demographics and overall professional environment that is essential to the company,” Daniel Thomas, Regional Partner at St. John Properties said in a press release.

The dealership will be a single-story facility that will feature Tesla’s typical minimalist, open concept design, ribbon-glass windows, a service and maintenance area, design studio, customer lounge, administrative and sales offices. Available inventory will be displayed in the surrounding parking lot alongside Tesla charging stations.

“Tesla is a distinctive brand emphasizing high performance, originality and authenticity, aspects which closely align with the St. John Properties’ mission.” Thomas said. “We believe Tesla’s presence in Valley Grove will be a natural fit and complement the existing companies and retailers.”

Once completed, the Pleasant Grove dealership will become the second Tesla dealership in Utah, joining the inaugural 2312 State St.  dealership in Salt Lake City that opened in 2015.

When compared to neighboring states like Colorado and Arizona, which both currently have six Telsa dealerships, and Nevada, which currently has three, Utah has been slow to jump onto the Tesla bandwagon.

This could largely be due to the company’s tumultuous legal history with the state of Utah. State law previously prevented car manufacturers from owning dealerships, effectively stopping Tesla Motors from owning dealerships within Utah. Interested parties could visit Tesla’s South Salt Lake showroom, but had to purchase the cars out of state. In April 2017, the Utah Supreme Court upheld this law.

House Bill 369, Auto Dealership License Amendments which was passed in 2018, made it so that Tesla could legally own and operate dealerships within Utah.

The bill was sponsored originally by Provo Sen. Curt Bramble and former Rep. Kim Coleman of West Jordan.

The 34,000-square-foot dealership will be located near Interstate 15 and North County Boulevard, on a 4-acre parcel within the Valley Grove mixed-use business community. It will sit alongside existing retailers like AT&T, Da Cloud Boba Shoppe, Jersey Mike’s Subs, Kolache Krave, Starbucks Coffee, Verizon, and Village Baker.
