Students at high levels of college sports have to put a lot of time into their craft, too. This effort on the field or court can cut into a person’s studying time. Lowering a school’s academic standards is an even bigger problem at institutions that value their standards, such as Yale or Stanford.

College Sports Scandals

In a billion-dollar industry, there are bound to be some unsavory individuals. Scandals in college sports can have a huge negative effect on school spirit and the community around the institution.

The scale and severity of the scandal will determine its lasting impact. It has become harder for schools to distance themselves from scandals because of the internet and social media. As a result, the impact these scandals can have on school spirit is increased.

Exploiting Athletes

At the highest levels, collegiate sports are essentially a full-time job. However, according to NCAA rules, athletes are not allowed to be compensated for their efforts. This has changed with the NIL rules, but students are still not allowed to be paid by the school directly.

College athletes are technically amateurs, so they are not allowed to be paid for their efforts. However, the schools that they play for are able to rake in hundreds of millions of dollars based on the students’ efforts. This is especially exploitative in sports that can be physically dangerous to play, like football.
