The aftermath of intense storms has public works crews and some residents across portions of Utah County in recovery mode.

Monday’s thunderstorm resulted in heavy rain totals in places like Eagle Mountain, which received about .76 inches, KSL News radio reported.

Neighborhoods in Saratoga Springs experienced heavy flooding, leaving some residents with water in their basements, according to a Fox13 report Monday evening.

On Tuesday, it seemed as if the storm returned with a vengeance, dumping hail throughout northern Utah County, including I-15 in Lindon, where UDOT snowplows were called out to clear piles of it off roadways, KUTV reported.

In Orem, multiple residents and community members reported massive flooding in their neighborhoods. High waters also overtook the skate park, nearly turning it into a community pool, the police department noted.

Orem Public Works Director Chris Tschirki said water pressure from the storm forced lids off the manholes of a nearby watch catch basin, which led to a stream of water spillage into the skate park.

“We had a storm event that probably exceeded a 100-year event, our systems are not designed to handle a 100-year event. They’re designed to handle a 10- or 25-year event, which is what you can anticipate around this area,” Tschirki said.

He said the most impacted areas were in northeast Orem, where the power of the storm left broken branches and tree limbs.

Two to 3 feet of water from the heavy rains seeped into parts of some homes that sit below the grade of the road.

The falling hail also damaged cars and other property.

“I’ve lived and worked in Orem for 30 years. I’ve never seen anything hit like that last night, especially with an added major hail and hail damage,” Tschirki said.

He says crews are in the midst of making sure culverts and storm drains are cleared in the event another storm impacts the area.

He predicts cleanup efforts may last into next week if not longer.

“We have three street sweepers that are actively out there cleaning all together, and we want to ensure that all the inlets are cleared. We can’t inspect every pipe because that just takes a lot of time, but we’re going to do our best to look at our major systems and prioritize kind of a plan of attack,” Tschirki told the Daily Herald.

They are also working with neighboring Lindon and Pleasant Grove, which were also impacted by the storm.

The Orem Public Works Department is providing sandbags for those who need them.

For residents who live in flood-prone areas, especially near the Provo River or Utah Lake, officials say it’s a good idea to stay prepared for similar weather events by studying flood plain maps and keeping a stash of sandbags on hand.

“If I lived in one of those areas, I would make sure that I had some good temporary measures to help protect my property,” Tschirki said.

Disaster relief such a flood event may not be guaranteed in a typical homeowners or renters insurance policy unless specifically written into the agreement.
