Utah’s new law imposing harsher punishments on those accused of engaging in road rage incidents has been in effect for less than two weeks. Now an Eagle Mountain man is facing a charge under heightened penalties for the offense.

41-year-old William Matherson Louis was charged on Monday with aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, according to court documents.

Authorities say Louis is accused of threatening to shoot another driver during a fit of road rage on Friday July 5, ABC4 reported.

The incident started in Saratoga Springs, continued along the Mountain View Corridor and Hwy. 73, eventually ending in an Eagle Mountain neighborhood, KSL TV reported.

Louis allegedly became agitated at another driver and would not let the other vehicle pass him.

The victim pulled onto another road only to be followed by Louis, who pulled up next to the other driver, rolled down his window and reportedly brandished a gun, threatening to shoot the victim, ABC4 reported.

Louis was located by deputies who found the alleged gun and arrested him sometime later that day, officials with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office told KSL.

According to court documents, if convicted, Louis could face a $1,000 fine and no less than one year in prison if convicted.

Utah’s new road rage law, which enhances the penalties for road rage, went into effect on July 1.

Louis is scheduled for an initial court appearance on July 19.

Starting at $4.32/week.
