Mother found shot alongside 8-year-son inside Saratoga Springs home has died, police say

Police said Jessica Lyman, 44, and her 8-year-old son, Eli Painter, were discovered “covered in blood” by her 17-year-old daughter last Friday morning.
According to police and first responders, Painter was pronounced dead at the scene. Lyman was immediately transported to a hospital in critical condition.
In a press release issued Sunday evening, Lyman’s condition had not changed, according to police.
On Wednesday, an obituary was published by her family stating that she had passed away Monday.
“Jessica’s life was defined by her deep love for her family, her unwavering dedication to her career, and her generous spirit,” the obituary reads.
An obituary was also published remembering the life of Painter.
He’s described as an eager learner who loved math and was known for his curious and creative spirit.
“A second grader at Riverview Elementary School, Eli was an eager learner who especially loved math. He thrived on curiosity and creativity, whether it was solving puzzles, building intricate LEGO creations, or diving into his favorite video games,” Painter’s obituary reads.
Separate GoFundMe accounts were started in honor of both Lyman and Painter in the wake of their deaths.
“This unimaginable loss has left our family in shock and profound grief. As we process this tragic reality, we are also committed to supporting the surviving members of the family as they navigate the challenges ahead,” Lyman’s cousin Stephanie Smith wrote.
As of Thursday, the circumstances around how Lyman and Painter died remain unknown. Saratoga Springs police have not yet indicated who they think may have been behind the shooting, as their investigation is ongoing.
A memorial balloon launch will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Riverview Elementary School, located at 273 Aspen Hills Blvd. in Saratoga Springs, to celebrate the boy and his mother’s lives and the joy they brought to those around them, according to Painter’s obituary.
Funeral services for both the mother and child will be held Tuesday, according to their obituaries.
