A makeshift memorial with balloons and flowers along with a note that reads “We Love You” was near a Pleasant Grove intersection on Wednesday in honor of a young boy who lost his life there the day prior.

Police said the 9-year-old was riding his bike when he was struck by a white pickup truck at the corner of 2600 North and 900 West just before 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The driver reportedly left the scene after the incident, according to police, who said they later were able to identify the suspected motorist as an elderly man, possibly in his 70s.

Police and first responders rendered aid to the young boy, before he was transported to a hospital where he later died.

By Wednesday afternoon, community members had placed blue, white and yellow ribbons along North County Boulevard in American Fork and 2600 North in Pleasant Grove, among other areas of the neighborhood, remembering the 9-year-old.

Pleasant Grove police have not released the boy’s name, but a GoFundMe created to help his family with medical and funeral expenses identified him as Dalton Gibbs.

Dalton was a light in the lives of everyone who knew him. He was full of laughter, curiosity, and kindness. He brought joy wherever he went and had a heart as big as his smile,” the crowd fundraiser reads.

During a news briefing with reporters on Wednesday, Capt. Britt Smith of the Pleasant Grove Police Department noted the grief and devastation people in the community are feeling in the wake of the incident.

“Pleasant Grove is a real tight-knit community…so when something like this happens to some of the most vulnerable and youngest people in their community, it hurts everybody,” Smith said.

One of Gibbs’ school classmates, Tristan, who along with his mother were observing the neighborhood tribute, said he’ll miss his friend.

He recalled seeing Gibbs just hours before the accident during lunch recess.

“He’s one of my only best friends I have,” Tristan said. “I have known him since the middle of the school year, and he’s a great kid.”

Smith said the suspected driver’s age may have likely been a factor in the crash. As of Wednesday afternoon, the man had not yet been charged, so police were not ready to identify him.

“The Pleasant Grove Police Department has a vested interest in justice. Our hearts are broken, (and) our hearts go out to the family and we are working overtime for the family to get justice,” Smith said.

As their investigation is ongoing in collaboration with the Utah County Attorney’s Office, police are calling for community assistance to gather evidence they say could be helpful.

Wednesday afternoon, Pleasant Grove said they believe a Tesla may have been in the area at the time of the accident and “may have captured valuable video evidence with the on board camera system.”

They’ve asked anyone who owns a Tesla and was operating it in that intersection at the time of the incident on Tuesday to contact the Pleasant Grove Police Department at 801-922-4532 so they can review the video footage of the intersection.
