A wildfire burns along the Mapleton foothills, Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025.

Firefighters are making progress in battling a wildfire burning along the eastern foothills of Mapleton, which has been deemed human-caused, police said late Saturday morning.

What’s being called the “Maple fire” ignited early Saturday morning and has burned approximately 50 acres, according to Utah Fire Info.

The Mapleton Police Department said the fire is burning on the south end of Fire Break Road.

Around 2:45 a.m., the fire had spread up the mountain but was moving away from homes, Utah Fire Info said.

At this time, evacuations of homes had not been ordered, but an evacuation warning was issued for people living south of the bench.

Crews worked through the night and early morning battling the flames and by 8 a.m., Mapleton police said crews had stopped forward progression of the fire.

More than a dozen agencies assisted Mapleton Fire and Rescue in the response as of Saturday morning. Police said there were no injuries to report.

Kelly Wickens, fire prevention specialist with Utah Forestry, Fire and State Lands, said crews will continue to fight the fire using ground and air resources.

“They will continue throughout the day to complete containment and or get containment around the fire and also put out hot spots,” she said.

In a social media post Saturday morning, Mapleton Public Safety Director John Jackson said police have identified how the fire started and the person(s) who may be responsible.

However, he noted that more investigating will need to be done before additional information is publicly released.

People are asked to stay clear of the area and to not fly drones near the fire.

Starting at $4.32/week.
