A swift response from fire personnel stopped the progression of a 50-acre fire that broke out in Mapleton early Saturday morning.

By Monday, Mapleton Fire Chief John Jackson said fire management is expected to announce full containment and that crews are no longer on the mountain.

“It’s unbelievable; it was quite humbling to watch,” Jackson said. “You’ve got our fire department that was there within minutes, and they’re on the radio calling for help from everywhere from Provo south and even into Sanpete County, and it just seems like those guys were there within seconds.”

Jackson confirmed that juveniles caused the fire, which broke out on the south end of Fire Break Road. Police know how they started it, but Jackson did not go into details due to an investigation.

The blaze was quickly mitigated thanks to the firefighting crews — which included county, city and state personnel — and a hotshot crew that was working the Buckley Draw Fire that was quickly reassigned.

U.S. Forest Service spokesperson Sierra Hellstrom, who is directing communications on the Buckley Draw Fire, said the hotshot crew was woken up to respond to the Mapleton fire, and that the nearby personnel directly led to the fire’s quick containment.

Jackson said that by 2 a.m. Saturday you could see headlamps going up the steep ridge with chainsaws blaring, and come daytime, the fire had ground to a halt.

“They virtually had it stopped, and there was no forward progress, so just a team effort that was unbelievable to watch,” he said.

Jackson asked people to be mindful about open burning and fire restrictions that are in place and said parents have a responsibility to make sure their children understand them.

“Kids are going to be kids; I understand that, but I don’t think they fully understand how dry and how these conditions are just amazing right now for fire,” he said.
