For the first time ever, adventure’s first stop can be made in Payson.

The city’s first Maverik store officially opened Friday on 67 W. 1130 North, directly north of the Interstate 15 Main Street exit. The location offers another travel stop along the southern Utah County corridor.

Though the popular gas and convenience store chain dots the rest of Utah Valley, it’s just the fourth Maverik to open south of Springville in the county, joining Spanish Fork, Mapleton and Santaquin. It features 14 gas pumps, fresh-made food and typical convenience store products.

Bringing Maverik to town was a long-time coming, according to Payson Mayor Bill Wright.

“I think it’s a major acquisition for the city; I really do,” Wright said. “We’ve been trying to work towards that goal for quite some time, at least since I’ve been mayor and probably before.”

The convenience store was built in a similar location to a Flying J that closed 10 to 15 years ago, according to Wright. He said the city missed the service and revenue that came with having a travel stop off of that exit and said community members he’s spoken to are excited about the addition to the community.

People also reacted to the store’s opening on Facebook.

“We went yesterday!” Lacy Elbaba said. “Super clean and friendly staff! Welcome to Payson!”

Other residents expressed their concern that the Maverik would increase traffic on a congested interchange, though.

“Glad it’s open, hate the location!” Pam Pappas said. “Hopefully they have plans to help the truck flow because it was awful before it was put in!”

“That exit will be even more of a mess now,” Serena McIntosh added. “I’m glad they gave us one but that’s a terrible location.”

The location of the new store has a lot to do with future enhancements coming to the interchange, according to Wright.

In a project slated to begin construction in 2027, UDOT seeks to improve access to I-15 and alleviate Main Street congestion. Phase 1 involves constructing a new partial interchange and a section of new roadway from I-15 to SR-198.

“This new Maverik was designed and located with that in mind, so everything should work out,” Wright said.

An official grand opening for the store will happen Thursday, where free items and discounts will be offered for Adventures Club members, including a free BonFire Burrito, free fountain refill and a free donut.

“I’ll be right there,” Wright said. “I’ll be glad to celebrate that.”

Starting at $4.32/week.
