Walmart received a warm welcome to the city of Eagle Mountain as its new supercenter officially opened its doors Wednesday morning.
Hundreds packed into the parking lot for the ceremonious grand opening under cloudy skies to watch as the ribbon was cut on the new 175,000-square-foot store.
Store manager Kevin Forsgren said the major retailer is honored to be a part of the growth happening in Eagle Mountain.
“We had a lot of positive feedback from the community, (who are) really excited for us to be here,” he said.
The new Walmart is located in the northeast corner of Eagle Mountain, near the corner of state Route 73 and Spring Run Parkway. The store is just east of The Ranches community, an area with limited choices for nearby grocery shopping.
One of the closest options is the Walmart Supercenter in neighboring Saratoga Springs, which is less than five miles away on state Route 73.
Despite the close proximity, Forsgren said Eagle Mountain residents take a lot of pride in their city, and the new store allows them to shop and spend money in their municipality.
“To be able to shop in your own community and give back to your own community is really important to them, so we anticipate a lot of loyal customers,” he told the Daily Herald.
Melissa Eaton, a resident of Saratoga Springs, said she’s excited about the new Walmart as it will be more accessible for her family during peak traffic times.
“We just live on the edge of Saratoga Springs (and Eagle Mountain), and so this one’s gonna be a lot easier to get to,” she said. “Especially when there’s high traffic in Saratoga Springs, like at 5 p.m. This one’s gonna be a lot easier for us to get to.”
In addition to grocery and general merchandise, the new supercenter has also reportedly created nearly 400 new jobs, Walmart said in an early August press release.
Wednesday morning’s grand opening featured remarks by leaders from Walmart and Eagle Mountain.
Eagle Mountain Mayor Tom Westmoreland said the city is excited about its future with the major retailer.
“I want to express my gratitude to Walmart for believing in the vision of Eagle Mountain and all of the hard work (and) all the great people that put in the work to make this a reality,” he said before the crowd. “So this is a momentous time for Eagle Mountain to be part of the Walmart family and looking forward to a very promising future together.”
The grand opening ceremony lineup also included the Cedar Valley High School marching band and cheerleaders.
Forsgren presented $2,500 in grants to both Utah Food Bank and Tabitha’s Way.
The Eagle Mountain Supercenter is Walmart’s latest next-generation store prototype and only the second of its kind in the country, according to a media release.
Some of the inside features include a redesigned front-end for quicker, more convenient checkouts, a spacious layout for better product discovery, a grab and go sushi bar as well as Utah County’s first Dunkin’ coffee location.
Eagle Mountain’s Walmart Supercenter is located at 9399 N. Spring Run Parkway.
