UDOT warns of travel delays in Spanish Fork Canyon during Labor Day weekend

Ongoing construction in Spanish Fork Canyon may result in moderate impacts for Labor Day travelers this weekend, the Utah Department of Transportation warned Thursday afternoon in a media release.

UDOT traffic engineers estimate commuters on westbound U.S. Highway 6 may encounter up to 30 minutes of additional delays between the hours of 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Monday. UDOT says traffic delays may persist for longer durations between 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Eastbound travel along U.S. Highway 6 may also face up to 10 minutes of additional delay between 2 and 6 p.m., UDOT said in its release.

As the Daily Herald previously reported, UDOT began a construction project earlier this month on U.S. Highway 6, going from Diamond Fork Road to the U.S. 89 junction near Thistle.

The highway has been reduced to one lane in both directions while crews work to install median barriers, enhance overhead lighting and fix drainage systems on the roadway.

UDOT says most of its current projects will halt construction over the three-day weekend to allow for all lanes of travel to open.

However, in the case of Spanish Fork Canyon, UDOT says “certain existing lane restrictions or traffic shifts will remain in place” in efforts to protect the work zone and ensure safety.

UDOT asks drivers to be aware of work-zone speeds through the area to ensure safety.

Starting at $4.32/week.
