Temporary closures and significant travel delays are expected on U.S. 189 in Provo Canyon and at Deer Creek Reservoir this week as the Utah Department of Transportation works on a road-widening project.

U.S. 189 will be closed between Main Canyon Road in Wallsburg and SR-113 in Charleston from 10-10:50 a.m. Thursday to clear a path for new northbound lanes, according to a news release.

From 10 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday the roadway will again close before shifting to one-way alternating traffic with flaggers until 9 a.m. Sunday morning.

UDOT is recommending drivers change their trip schedule or use alternative routes on Saturday night and Sunday morning. UDOT Region 3 spokesperson Wyatt Woolley said Wallsburg will still be accessible from Utah County.

UDOT began a two-year project in October to widen U.S. 189 to two lanes in each direction between Wallsburg and Charleston. Doing so will require building a new roadway on the hillside above the existing road that will serve as the northbound route.

The project will address safety concerns and growing traffic jams near Deer Creek Reservoir as commuters drive between Utah County and the Wasatch Back, according to Woolley.

“We’re fully aware of the traffic needs and the commuter travel, and so we’re hoping that this project will help alleviate a lot of that,” he said.

Starting at $4.32/week.
