The Utah County Sheriff's Office emblem is shown Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2024.The man who drowned at Silver Lake Flat Reservoir on Saturday night died after rescuing a 12-year-old female family member, according to a Utah County Sheriff’s Office update.
Sgt. Raymond Ormond posted on the office’s Facebook page Monday that Daniel Braga Figueiredo, 31, borrowed a paddle board and went out to help the girl, who was drifting further out into the reservoir in an inflatable tube.
Ormond said witnesses saw the two struggling to steady themselves and they each fell into the water. Others went out to assist them, and Figueiredo was last seen lifting the 12-year-old onto an inflatable device before disappearing under the water.
This prompted witnesses to call 911, and rescuers from several agencies responded, Ormond said. The search ended when Figueiredo’s body was recovered from the reservoir around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
“We would like to again offer our condolences to the family,” Ormond said. “To all the agencies that responded or offered to send resources, thank you. Dozens of first responders and SAR volunteers assisted with this incident.”
It is the second paddleboarding-related accident in Utah County in two weeks.
The Utah Department of Natural Recourses reminded all recreation enthusiasts about important safety measures they should follow.
“Summer is here, and thousands of Utahns are preparing to head into the outdoors with their friends and family,” it said in the post. “The Utah Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division is happy to see people enjoying scenic rivers. However, it’s vital for all visitors to practice safe and responsible recreation.
“Always wear an appropriate life jacket for river use.
“Research the river system to understand how to navigate it safely.
“If unsure of your abilities, consider going with a guide.
