Chain chatter: Buc-ee’s isn’t coming to Utah County — for now

Shoppers head into a Buc-ee's store Oct. 3, 2024, in Johnstown, Colo.

Social media caught fire last week after a KSL Sports Zone radio host posted on X in a since-deleted tweet that Buc-ee’s, the popular Texas-based gas and convenience store, was coming to Spanish Fork.

The rumor was quickly addressed — and dispelled — by Spanish Fork last week.

But the speculation quickly shifted that Buc-ee’s was actually coming to another southern Utah County city: Springville.

The Art City neither confirmed nor denied the validity of those rumors Monday.

“All I can say is that I would watch for an official announcement from Buc-ee’s at some point if there’s going to be one coming or not,” Springville Director of Administration Patrick Monney told the Daily Herald.

Based on recent developments, a Buc-ee’s in Utah does not seem so far-fetched.

Last year, Buc-ee’s opened in Colorado near Fort Collins, and the travel center recently broke ground on a new store in Goodyear, Arizona. Other reports say Buc-ee’s is considering building in Meridian, Idaho.

When the rumors were pinned to Spanish Fork, the city quickly denied it.

“Some say if you whisper ‘Buc-ee’s’ three times at sunset, a beaver appears with a brisket sandwich. That’s about as real as the Texas-sized rumor going around. Should that ever change, we’ll let you know,” Spanish Fork City said via Facebook.

Spanish Fork spokesperson Jack Urquhart said Monday he isn’t sure how the rumor originally started, though the city heard plenty about it following the KSL broadcaster’s announcement.

“Nobody here at the city knows anything about it, from the city manager to the mayor to the director of community development,” Urquhart said. “We haven’t been approached by Buc-ee’s. We haven’t had a conversation with them. We would be open to a conversation with them; we’d love that.”

He added that even after Spanish Fork responded to the rumor, more speculation followed, as people claimed Buc-ee’s had spoken to Spanish Fork but the city couldn’t make it work.

“That didn’t happen,” Urquhart said.

Urquhart has also heard the rumors of it being built in Springville. “Maybe it is; we don’t know,” he said.

The mega convenience store started in Texas in 1983 and first expanded outside the Lone Star state in 2019 with a location in Alabama. It has gained popularity for its mega-sized stores, clean bathrooms, barbecue sandwiches and brand apparel, according to Southern Living.

Starting at $4.32/week.
