Micheal Aaron Jayne is accused of running over and killing a Santaquin police officer Sunday, May 5, 2024, on Interstate 15.Additional charges may be handed down to Michael Aaron Jayne, the man accused of running over and killing Santaquin Police Sgt. Bill Hooser in May of last year, after he allegedly attacked multiple deputies at the Utah County Jail, reportedly leaving some of them with injuries.
Jayne, 43, was being investigated Tuesday for having contraband in his cell at the county jail, where he’s already awaiting trial for the murder of Hooser.
According to a probable cause affidavit, correctional deputies escorted Jayne to a room to question him about what was found, and at some point he reportedly got upset and became confrontational with the officers.
The court documents state that Jayne was “polite and respectful” during the initial interaction, but that reportedly changed as deputies spoke with about the items.
Deputies allege that Jayne became angry, aggressive and made threats toward them, according to the affidavit.
“Jayne quickly sprang out of his chair, slapped the table, pushing it towards deputies, and then took a fighting stance. As deputies moved towards Jayne to place him in cuffs, he threw a punch towards one of the deputies,” the affidavit reads.
The deputy purportedly was able to block the punch and then pinned Jayne against the wall.
“Jayne then turned his aggression towards this deputy, making verbal threats to kill him,”the affidavit states.
As the struggle ensued, Jayne allegedly knocked the glasses from one of a deputy’s face and attempted to gouge their eyes with his fingers, according to the document.
“This caused skin to be ripped from the Deputy’s eyelid, swelling, and scratches to both eyes,” the Utah County’s Sheriff’s Office said in a media release Thursday. “The Deputy has limited vision in his right eye and will have to wear an eye patch.”
Jayne allegedly continued the assault after deputies were able to take him to the ground, when it’s reported that he grabbed the injured deputy’s eyeglasses and attempted to stab and cut them in the abdomen and side of his ribs.
“This caused several small lacerations to the deputy. The other deputy involved suffered a broken right elbow with a bone fragment being chipped off,” the sheriff’s office said.
Eventually, other deputies arrived and Jayne was subdued and placed in restraints, according to a description of the events.
The two deputies who were initially interviewing Jayne were transported to a hospital for treatment, two of the additional responding deputies were also sent to local hospitals to be seen for their injuries.
One had a sprained wrist and fingers, the other was diagnosed with a mild concussion, according to the sheriff’s office.
Jayne is previously accused of intentionally running over Hooser during a traffic stop along Interstate 15 on May 5, 2024. He faces nine felony charges, including aggravated murder, for the alleged act. Utah County attorneys said last fall they are seeking the death penalty in the case.
His next hearing is slated for Nov. 25.
In light of the new allegations, Jayne could face additional felony charges including aggravated assault by a prisoner, assault by a prisoner and criminal mischief.
“Our responding deputies showed great restraint, quickly ending the violent attack and subduing Jayne,” the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said in its statement. “We greatly appreciate all of our deputies and hope that our injured team members quickly and fully recover.”
