The past several days have not been easy for the family of a Lehi teen who was struck by a car after leaving a church dance late Friday night.
Lehi police said as people were leaving the event, the 14-year-old girl was crossing the street when she was reportedly hit by a vehicle traveling south on 500 West near the Lehi Rodeo Grounds, where the dance was taking place.
Officials did not name the teen, but her family has identified her as Jenna Sharp of Lehi.
The incident left Sharp with a serious brain injury. She was initially taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital but was later air-lifted to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake, where she remains in the intensive care unit.
On Monday evening, her family, loved ones, classmates and dozens of others gathered for a candlelight vigil at Willowcreek Middle School, where she attends, to show support for Sharp and her family.
Holly Voisin, a family friend and spokesperson on their behalf at this time, was instrumental in organizing the vigil.
She said the strength of the community is being felt by the Sharp family and they are grateful for such warmth and compassion.
“On behalf of those who love Jenna Sharp, we want to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us at the vigil last night and to the many others who have offered prayers, kindness and support during this incredibly difficult time,” Voisin said.
On Tuesday morning, ribbons containing two of Sharp’s favorite colors — sage green and white — remained wrapped around trees and various signage posts across the outside of Willowcreek’s campus in her honor.
While Sharp’s recovery remains uncertain at this time, her family released a statement that was provided to the Daily Herald. It says:
“Our family is facing an incredibly difficult and emotional time. Our daughter, Jenna Sharp, was in a serious accident and is currently in critical condition in the ICU.
“We’ve been deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support from friends, family, and our community. Your kind messages, prayers, and care have meant more than we can express and are truly helping to carry us through.
“We also want to express our deepest gratitude to the first responders, nurses, doctors, and staff at Primary Children’s Hospital. Their quick action, skill, and compassion have made all the difference during the most critical moments of Jenna’s care.
“As we focus on Jenna and care for our children at home, we kindly ask for privacy during this tender time. We also ask that people refrain from spreading unverified information online. Please rely on updates shared directly by our family or trusted sources, and help us protect Jenna’s dignity and our family’s well-being.
“Thank you for holding Jenna–and all of us–in your thoughts. Your continued support means the world.”
