A Provo police car is parked on Center Street on Saturday, June 25, 2022.

A Provo man was arrested Monday after police said he assaulted two young girls while swimming in the children’s pool area at the Provo Recreation Center.

Alfonso Lopez Gutierrez, 32, was booked into the Utah County Jail and faces three counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child.

According to an affidavit, the man touched a 10-year-old child and her 13-year-old sister while swimming in the lazy river portion of the pool. Multiple adult parents and a lifeguard witnessed the man’s behavior, police said.

He was allegedly seen touching other people, but no one else came forward to police.

The affidavit said one victim recounted being followed by the man to a corner of the pool area and he tried to touch her, but she was able to swim away. The mother of the victims said she saw the man at the pool a week prior and one of her children referred to him as “the creepy man,” according to the affidavit.

In an interview with police, the man admitted he had been to the pool “maybe once or twice before” but denied being there in previous days.
