Charges were filed Tuesday in Provo District Court against a man accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.

The Utah County Attorney’s Office charged James Jayden Smith, 18, of Murray, with one count of sodomy of a child, one count of object rape of a child and one count of rape of a child. Smith also faces misdemeanor charges for allegedly distributing drugs to a minor.

As alleged by police, Smith had been communicating with the child on social media and traveled to Utah County on or around June 9 to visit her. Court documents purport that Smith sexually assaulted the child after the two consumed alcohol and marijuana, which he had brought.

Smith is being held without bail. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life in prison, according to court documents.
