A man said to be in his 70s reportedly crashed his truck into a business at an American Fork strip mall Friday morning, sending several people to the hospital.

According to American Fork Fire & Rescue, just after 10 a.m. crews responded to reports that a vehicle had crashed into the Anvil Barber Co., which is located in a strip mall at 52 E. Main St.

When they arrived, crews spotted a Ford F-150 pickup that had collided with the building and went through the front of the structure, resulting in significant damage, fire officials said.

Officer Colton Rothe, of the American Fork Police Department said two people who were inside the barbershop were taken to a hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but police say it appears the man mistook the gas pedal for the brake pedal.

“We don’t suspect any drug or alcohol related issues, (he) just accelerated through the building,” Rothe told reporters.

He said the driver was shaken up by the incident but was not significantly injured.

The Utah County special response team, American Fork City building engineers and neighboring agencies were called out to assist with structural assessment and stabilizing the building.

The barbershop was left with a massive hole through its front wall, though police said none of the other businesses were impacted by the crash.

Portions of Main Street between State Street and Center Street were shut down for a time but had reopened by noon.
