The new Lego store at University Place in Orem opened Friday and was met with fanfare from customers excited to see the popular plastic building toy company make its way to Utah Valley.
Hundreds of people, including Orem Mayor David Young, participated in opening events throughout the weekend, placing Lego blocks on a giant mural and purchasing items.
“It was so much fun,” Lego store manager Josh James said. “The mayor of Orem was here, we had a lot of our builders here that are a part of our Utah Lego user groups, so they had all their displays out, and we had just a few hundred people that were just excited to come in.”
The new, 2,615-square-foot store, located in the center of University Place, is the 112th Lego store in the United States and will cater to customers on the southern end of the Wasatch Front. Previously, the nearest Lego store to Utah Valley residents was at Fashion Place Mall in Murray.
“We’re so excited for all of it and it’s just great to get this market served and be able to just bring some more fun down to Utah County, and you don’t have to travel so far, and we just get to have fun with it,” James said.
Opening weekend contained a number of festivities inside and outside of the new store. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday morning, while members of the Utah Lego user groups showed off their towering structures and customers were each handed a small Lego block when they entered the store.
Opening week promotions will continue Monday through Saturday as the Lego store will offer a reusable tote bag with purchases of $50 or more.
