After Splash Summit Waterpark’s idea to build a new waterpark faced a setback, the company is exploring new ways to expand its amenities within its existing space in Provo.

The waterpark announced Tuesday it will debut Utah’s first virtual reality waterslide next summer. Guests may wear a specially designed, waterproof VR headset as they go down an existing water slide for a custom entertainment experience.

“Introducing the first VR waterslide in Utah is a natural next step for us,” said Jodi Nielsen, general manager of Splash Summit Waterpark, in a release. “We’re always looking for ways to surprise and delight our guests, and this ride will offer an experience unlike anything else in the region.”

The announcement comes months after Splash Summit presented an informal plan at a Provo Neighborhood District 2 meeting last May to buy city-owned land near Slate Canyon to build a new waterpark and resort. The proposal was met with pushback from residents, and in July, Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi announced the land was not for sale.

“For a few years we’ve been looking to expand, and we’ve hit some slowdowns on that expansion, and a lot of it probably had to do with the city and location,” Splash Summit spokesperson Nick Strong said. “And so we’ve thought, ‘hey, how do we expand the park where we’re at?'”

Strong said Splash Summit is still going to pursue expansion — but whether that entails acquiring more land or moving the entire facility is undetermined. He said new things will come to the park in the coming years, beginning with the VR slide.

“(VR slides) are extremely popular in Asia and Europe. They’re all over in those countries,” Strong said. “But in the United States, this will only be the third park. So it’s actually something super special.”

Using technology from Ballast VR, the VR headset will be customized to fit the twists, curves and drops of the existing slide and offer a variety of different experiences.

“You may be in space one day, and you may be in the Safari on another journey,” Strong said.

The slide may be ridden with or without VR, and the VR experience will require a small additional fee, according to the release.

Starting at $4.32/week.
