A pedestrian was killed in a fatal train accident in Provo Thursday morning.

A 35-year-old man was walking northbound on Freedom Boulevard and the 600 South railroad crossing at 10:15 a.m. when he went around lowered barriers and was struck by a Union Pacific freight train, according to Provo Police spokeswoman Jana-Lee Holland.

The accident temporarily shut down the FrontRunner and the Freedom Boulevard crossing, both of which were reopened by Thursday afternoon.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, and the man’s name has yet to be released.
