Investigators search the Jordan River for evidence in a homicide case on Monday, Nov. 17, 2025, in Saratoga Springs.

The investigation into the shooting deaths of 44-year-old Jessica Lyman and her 8-year-old son, Eli Painter, extended to the Jordan River on Monday as officials searched the waterway for any evidence to assist in the case.

A block of road on Riverside Drive alongside the Jordan River and near the the victims’ home was blocked off as divers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation assisted Saratoga Springs police in the search.

On March 26, officers responded to a report of a possible death investigation and located Lyman in serious condition from a gunshot wound and Painter deceased from a gunshot wound. Lyman was transported to the Utah Valley Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries.

No suspects have been taken into custody.

Saratoga Springs spokeswoman AnnElise Harrison said authorities have followed a path of investigation and that it has led to the river — though she said police are not specifying what evidence they’re looking for — and that local police requested the FBI’s assistance.

“They’re just kind of searching through the whole area, seeing if they can find any additional evidence to assist with proving what happened,” she said.

Harrison said the county previously assisted with the investigation by using magnets to drag the river and see if they could pull anything up, but that it was unsuccessful.

The current low river level makes for an ideal time to use manpower to search the area, according to Harrison. The plan is to search the river for up to a week.

“There might be some places where (the divers) have to be submerged. There are places where it’s up to maybe 6 feet. But then there are other places where it’s just really quite mucky,” she said.

The family of the victims issued the following statement about the FBI’s assistance with the case:

“It has been nearly eight months since an act of senseless violence took the lives of our daughter and sister, Jessica Lyman, and our grandson and nephew, Eli Painter. We never imagined our family would face this kind of tragedy, and it has been very emotionally difficult.

“Since March 28, we have worked closely and consistently with the Saratoga Springs Police Department and other local and national law enforcement agencies in pursuit of justice. We are encouraged by this search of the Jordan River by the dive team for additional evidence, and we remain hopeful it will help bring accountability to those responsible. We miss Jessica and Eli every single day and continue to seek the answers and justice their memories deserve.”

Anyone with information regarding the investigation is asked to contact the Saratoga Springs Police Department.
