When the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games return to the Beehive State for the first time in more than three decades in 2034, they will do so under a different name.

The 2034 Organizing Committee announced Monday the Olympics will forgo naming the event after the host city of Salt Lake City and instead call it Utah 2034 to represent the whole state.

“From our capital of Salt Lake City out to every corner of our state, the Utah 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be shared by all Utahns,” said organizing committee President and Executive Chair Fraser Bullock in a news release. “We are all Utahns together! Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together.”

The announcement marks the first time an Olympics will be named after the hosting state instead of the hosting city.

Similar to the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Olympics, venues for the Utah 2034 Olympics, which begins in 3,000 days, will be held across Northern Utah.

While most events are projected to take place in Salt Lake County or Park City, proposed venues include hockey at Peaks Ice Arena in Provo, cross country skiing at Soldier Hollow in Midway and Alpine Skiing at Snowbasin Resort in Weber County.

Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi told the Daily Herald in a statement Monday that the new branding recognizes “the commitment a community, like Provo, has made to keep the Olympic dream alive.”

“As Utah’s only self-sufficient Olympic venue, the Peaks Ice Arena was a big part of the story promoting the return of the Olympics to Utah in 2034,” Kaufusi said.

Olympic officials also introduced a new wordmark for Utah 2034, debuted Olympics merchandise and unveiled a new art installation for the games at Salt Lake City International Airport.

The wordmark will serve as the committee’s transition logo until the official Games logo is implemented in 2029, according to the release.

“The Utah 2034 wordmark tells the story of the state of Utah and the athletes who will compete in 2034,” said Vice Chair Steve Starks. “The unique characters of Utah 2034 are embodied in it with shapes and angles reminiscent of the landforms of the American West, as well as those of athletes in action.”

The art installation is 12 feet high, is titled Utah Together Spectacular and is located on the arrival/departure level of the airport.

The art displays the Games’ new logo and title, equipped with an outline of the state.

“As we lead up to 2034, over 200 million Utah visitors will pass by this marker,” Utah 2034 CEO Brad Wilson said. “It’s a symbol of Utah’s commitment to welcoming the world.”
