A Springville teen and her boyfriend were killed in a crash after a man suspected of driving under the influence collided with their vehicle in Salt Lake City on Saturday morning.

Anneka Wilson, 17, and Leo Shepherd, 18, were traveling northbound on Interstate 15 near 1900 South in a Nissan Rogue when Jose Jimenez, who was driving on the wrong side of the road in an Audi SQ5, struck their vehicle head-on, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

Wilson and Sheperd’s vehicle was engulfed in flames, and they were both pronounced dead at the scene, a UHP news release said. Jimenez, 21, sustained minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

“We were deeply saddened to learn of the unexpected passing of Anneka Wilson, a current Springville High School student and a valued member of Springville FFA,” Springville High said Sunday in a social media post. “We are thinking of her family, friends, classmates and all who loved her during this difficult time.”

A GoFundMe was published asking people for support for the families as they navigate the loss.

The GoFundMe described Wilson as a a “loving, caring soul” who had a turquoise jewelry collection, loved old country western music and loved being outdoors.

“She was known for her stubborn spirit, her zest for life, and her way of living every moment to its fullest,” the post said.

Shepherd was memorialized as a kind, big-hearted person who loved hunting with his family, working with his hands and being an uncle.

“Leo was gentle, warm, and real. A hard worker. A family man. Someone who found joy in good company, good work, and good stories,” the GoFundMe said.

Starting at $4.32/week.
