Fans react at LaVell Edwards Stadium during a college football game against Portland State on Aug. 30, 2025.The BYU versus Utah football game always brings the intensity — and with it, a heightened security presence.
Officers from BYU police and at least 15 additional local agencies will provide security at Saturday’s game at 6 p.m. at LaVell Edwards Stadium, according to BYU police spokesperson Karen Ellingson.
“It’ll be a full effort,” Ellingson said. “This is rivalry game, and every rivalry game there’s a lot of emotions, and everyone’s really excited to be there, so we take that into consideration when we are planning the safety for the game.”
Ellingson also said there is a security plan for Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff” pregame show that will take place at 8 a.m. in the parking lot west of LaVell Edwards Stadium.
Public safety was at the forefront of the rivalry conversation this week after an Emery County man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly threatening on social media to shoot any Utah fans in attendance at Saturday’s game.
Last year, a North Salt Lake man was charged with throwing a water bottle and hitting a BYU cheer coach at the BYU-Utah game in Salt Lake City.
The rivalry game also comes just over a month after Charlie Kirk was shot and killed at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. UVU launched an independent review of campus security following the incident, and heightened security was reported at college events statewide.
Ellingson asked fans attending Saturday’s game to be familiar with stadium policies and, if they have concerns, to call 911 for an emergency or BYU police’s nonemergency line at 801-422-0911.
The Provo Police Department also announced Friday that Canyon Road will be closed between University Parkway and Stadium Avenue from 8 p.m. Friday to 11 p.m. Saturday.
